March 8-16
Over Spring Break this year we attempted to summit Mt. Shasta and Mt. Whitney.
Trip dates and description follows:
1. Left Pullman, WA on March 8 at about 7:30PM
2. Got to Redding, CA around 7:30AM on March 9
3. Climbed to 9500ft on Mt. Shasta Casaval Ridge on March 10
bad conditions-slushy snow-post-holing almost all day
4. Slept in too late and didn't leave camp till about 7:30AM March 11
extremely bad conditions with slushy snow
decided to turn around after getting to Helen Lake (10,000ft)
5. Left Redding, CA for Mt. Whitney around 9:30AM on March 12
Arrived at Lone Pine, CA by 7:30PM
Drove passed the Closed Road sign and all the way to The Whitney Portal and camped.
6. Started up the North Fork Lone Pine Creek (Mountaineers Route) by about 8:00AM March 13
Made camp just below Iceberg Lake at about 12,000ft by 6:30PM
7. Left for the Summit at about 4:30AM March 14 and Summited by 10:00AM
Got back to camp by about 3:00PM and back to the Portal by 11:30PM.
Drove for an hour to Bishop, CA and slept in the truck.
8. Left Bishop, CA at 8:00AM.
Took turns driving all the way back to Pullman, WA on March 15...
9. Got home around 2:00AM March 16
